Mission Statement
The Mission of Traditional Voices Group is twofold. TVG documents, collects, and preserves the cultural and musical heritage and the traditions that are unique to the communities of the Toe River Valley in the southern Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina. TVG also preserves and promotes the memory of Lesley Riddle (1905-1979). An African-American musician who was born, lived periodically, and died in Yancey County Riddle had a significant influence on the early history of country music through his association with the Carter family of Maces Spring, Virginia.
The collection of oral histories, documents, art and music is available through the use of text, audio and video recordings for the purpose of scholastic pursuits, pride and unity of community and for present and future generations to understand the significance of what and how these areas have contributed to American culture.
